“A wish of Startup Organizations to Setup internal PMO”
Organization and companies makes a very common mistake of setting up internal PMO setup without a clear vision and understanding of PMO and that becomes the major cause of failure. First of all, experienced resources in the market just don’t take the risk by switching to a startup company. And the real issue starts when companies hire a seasoned resources for such positions and not paying competitive salary. As a result of this dilemma, the resources they get generally are not as par the level required for the assignment and become the main cause of failure for initial projects. Obviously the company will be lucky if get more projects and hire quality PMO resources to change the fortune of the company in the future.
Ori Schibi, in his article “Why PMOs do not deliver to their potential” highlighted the reasons of PMO failure that ultimately later becomes the reason of project failure. Looking at those reasons, it seems most of the organizations encounter lack of experience. The only way to reduce the risk is to add experience at a very early stage.
For the early projects, the best option for such companies and organizations is to opt for a Project Management Consultant at lease and let their internal PMO work with consultant to setup and implement processes and practices. This will allow them to gradually build their PMO processes and they can take on from there. The consultant may remain with them for once or twice a year for audit of processes performance and audit will help with suggestion for improvement as well.
